Our artwork is based on BCT's photograph of an 80s sign on the front of Selly Oak library, which was closed by Birmingham Council in 2018 and has been left to ruin. The slogan is adapted from the Manic Street Preachers song 'A Design for Life'... LIBRARIES GIVE US POWER.
The tees and prints are a protest to the drastic cuts proposed across library services. For the duration of September, during Birmingham City Council's library consultation period, all profits from this project were donated towards the printing costs of Brum Library Zine - an incredible volunteer-led protest publication which was available for free in all community libraries. We donated £1215.
